Aaron and David were matched with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado in March 2018 when Aaron was just 11 years old. Aaron and David connected from the very start of their match and have enjoyed participating in a bunch of fun activities offered by the Sports Buddies program. These activities include dominating a ropes course in Buena Vista, going to a Rockies game, knocking down strikes at a bowling event, and flying in a plane together at our Aviation Day event – just to name a few!
In August of 2018, Aaron and David shared a very important moment together. These two were having fun at our Longboard event that day when Aaron decided that he wanted David to know that he identifies as gay. David was honored that Aaron was willing to share this with him!
Around the same time, Aaron also came out to his friends in school. Since then, Aaron has been a leader among LGBTQ+ students at his middle school. First, his courage to identify himself to his peers has resulted in many of his other classmates feeling emboldened to be their true authentic selves. Second, Aaron has spearheaded an LGBTQ+ support group at his school. The students in this group meet monthly to discuss topics pertaining to the LGBTQ+ community and how they can best support students that identify as LGBTQ+ at their school.
Aaron is an emerging leader in our community! And his mentor, David, is there to support him every step of the way! Congratulations to Aaron and David and their growing friendship!
