Mentor2.0 Match Highlight: Yarely and Wendy

Wendy and Yarely were matched at Sheridan High School in 2015.  At first, Yarely was anxious about high school. Each week, in the mentor2.0 classroom, she had the opportunity to connect with her mentor, someone older and with more experience, who she could confide in about her worries and anxiety. Wendy recently shared, “I have watched Yarely evolve over the years, from tackling the insecurities associated with being a high school freshman to blossoming as a senior leader and role model for her school. In addition to being highly engaged in extracurricular activities, Yarely has pursued a rigorous academic schedule, obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant certification, and worked part-time after school while consistently demonstrating conduct and demeanor of which we can all be proud. I know I couldn’t be prouder to know and support this young lady and aspiring college student. Yarely is a shining example of the responsible, accountable, and empowered youth promoted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado.”

In addition to graduation and attending college in the fall, Yarely was also chosen as the sole recipient of a scholarship presented by BOK Financial. When asked about the role of her mentor in her success, Yarely said, “Wendy has helped me with a plan to continue my life after high school. I know for a fact that I want to continue pursuing my nursing career to become a registered nurse. Not only did she help me with planning for my future, but also the resume writing and the practice interviews that helped me land my first job! Wendy has helped guide me on the right path. If it wasn’t for her dedication and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Wendy has been a huge support and an outstanding mentor who truly cares about me and my future. She has helped me over the course of these past four years to better discover who I truly am and who I want to be.”
