Emmelly (Little) and Meredith (Big) have been matched since September 2019 in our Mentor2.0 program at Englewood High School. They connect largely on the law profession, as Meredith is a prosecutor and Emmelly wants to be an immigration lawyer. During social distancing, they participate in Zoom calls to catch up and message each other more than once a week.
Emmelly shared about her match with Meredith:
“For starters Meredith has a career in law which is the type of career I want to pursue when I get older so she always gives me tips and advice of how life is going to be when going to law school or working in law. Thanks to these tips I’m able to mentally prepare myself and I get an idea of what to somewhat expect.
Another way Meredith has helped me is by going out of her way from her day to come to school and help me fill out a scholarship application form. The application went really well that they contacted me back and I was able to get an interview with the people who run the scholarship program. Overall, Meredith has just been an amazing person in my life who has just pushed me to do greater things and literally get a better future.”
Meredith shared about her match with Emmelly:
“I have to be honest that I wasn’t sure what to expect from Mentor2.0, but in a short period of time I have already come to be so inspired and impacted by Emmelly. Although she comes from difficult circumstances, Emmelly ranks in the top 10 of her class and has goals to be the first high school graduate in her family and to someday go to law school. She has overcome so much adversity, but you would never know by talking to her; she is one of the most positive and hard working people I have ever met. Emmelly has shown me that no matter your circumstances, if you are goal oriented, you can do whatever you put your mind to.
As we are dealing with the uncertainty of COVID-19, I try to embrace Emmelly’s attitude of overcoming obstacles and staying positive. My experience as a mentor has been extremely fulfilling for me – more than I could have imagined. I am excited to see how Emmelly and I will continue to impact each other in the future.”
