Xcel Energy is committed to bettering the communities it serves and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado is grateful for the support and partnership of Xcel Energy and its employees. With a focus on inspiring the next generation of the STEM workforce, Xcel Energy has partnered with BBBSC to offer Littles support and education for careers in STEM.
As the annual sponsor of the BBBSC STEM Day, Xcel Energy didn’t allow in-person restrictions to keep Littles from participating in STEM Day and helped create the first Virtual STEM Day in February. Matches received hands-on STEM kits and Xcel employees guided them through creating their own circuits over Zoom while also sharing about their careers.
It was a great opportunity for girls in our program to be inspired by women working in the STEM industry. Marie Vagher, a senior engineer at Xcel, was the lead volunteer for the activity with matches and expressed how important it is to provide opportunities for girls in STEM.
“Being a woman working in STEM, I’ve found that success comes with being confident in yourself and your abilities, and surrounding yourself with a strong support system. It’s important we build confidence in young girls to take the road less traveled. Girls come with a unique set of skills and only with opportunity will they have a chance to prove their value to the STEM industry.”
Additionally, Xcel Energy supports BBBSC through grant funding from the Xcel Energy Foundation, event sponsorship, and employee involvement on our Board of Directors and Associate Board. Employees support our mission through volunteerism, employee contributions, corporate matching gifts, and United Way campaigns.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado and Xcel Energy are working together to ignite the potential of Colorado’s youth through supportive mentoring relationships and educational opportunities.
