Little Sister Deysi (Daisy) and Big Sister Laura were first matched in BBBSC’s Denver mentor2.0 program through Deysi’s school then transitioned to the Community-based program to continue their relationship outside the school.
Unfortunately, the pandemic hit at the same time, limiting their in-person meetings. But that did not stop them from connecting weekly every Monday night through Zoom or FaceTime. They would have virtual college tours or make a list of colleges to apply to.
About three months into the Community-based program, Deysi let Laura know that she was pregnant and due in January 2021. Laura responded, “All will be fine and there is a reason we were matched together.”
Deysi worked incredibly hard and finished her senior year with honors and was the speaker at her graduation ceremony. She also received a full ride scholarship to the University of Colorado at Boulder. Laura’s positive support and genuine care has contributed to Deysi’s success and ability to own her potential as she embarks on her future. They plan to continue their relationship way beyond graduation.
