Little Brother Alan and Big Brother Ezra have been matched for six years in the Community-based mentoring program. Ezra recalls, “When I first met Alan, I knew there would be zero dull moments! I immediately picked up on his curiosity and sense of humor. After our first few hangouts together, I knew I had a buddy for life!”
Alan and Ezra enjoy cooking, playing sports, working out together, and fixing things. Ezra has brought Alan along as his handyman when he has clients who need help renting their homes or are getting ready to list their home on the market. Alan is interested in real estate and, with Ezra’s help, started building his resume this past spring so that he could get a summer job.
Alan was able to land a part-time summer job learning how to create logos! Alan worked the whole summer and was very proud to be earning some money. Alan shared some of the money with his mother, bought himself some clothes, and put some of it into his savings account. He reported to Ezra, “Hard work pays off!”
Emmatt, Alan’s mother, shares why she and Alan sought out Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado: “I believe we chose to be part of the program to find a mentor because Alan needed someone to look up to as a role model. His father and his big brother have been incarcerated for most of his life. His big sister was in the program already and he had seen them go out and do fun things together. Alan asked if he could be part of the program during an intake and was told he could get in the program when he turned 8. He waited patiently and was awarded the best Big Brother… Ezra! He has helped Alan through many obstacles and lots of challenging moments. He has really been a blessing to our family.”
