As the holiday season arrives, our thoughts turn to family, warmth, and giving back to the community. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado (BBBSC), this time of year holds special significance as we reflect on the incredible impact of the community’s generosity and how it fuels life-changing connections for Colorado’s youth. We invite you to join us in creating these moments of growth and joy for the next generation, knowing that each gift done during year-end giving has the power to change a young person’s life.
Supporting Futures Through Mentorship
For many young people, mentorship provides the support they need to reach their potential. Just ask Kyle, a dedicated Big Brother in our Sports Buddies program. Kyle, who works at the Colorado School of Mines Foundation, joined BBBSC in 2017, driven by his love of sports and his desire to give back to his community. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Kyle found a home in Colorado and a connection with Little Ayden, who was just eight years old when they met. Today, Ayden is a spirited 15-year-old with a competitive streak and a love for basketball, which he shares with his Big Brother.
“Kyle and Ayden’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship,” says Elycia Cook, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado. “Kyle has been there for Ayden, cheering him on and helping him grow not just as an athlete but as a young leader. This is the kind of connection that transforms lives—and it’s made possible by the support of our community.”
Give Big on Colorado Gives Day
One powerful way to support mentorships like Kyle and Ayden’s is through Colorado Gives Day. Held on December 10, this annual day of giving rallies communities across the state to support nonprofits that create meaningful change. Donations made on Colorado Gives Day for year-end giving are matched in part by an incentive fund, meaning your gift goes even further. By scheduling your donation early or contributing on December 10, you’re joining thousands of Coloradans who believe in the power of generosity to change lives.
“The beauty of Colorado Gives Day is that it amplifies the power of each gift,” Elycia adds. “On this one day, we see communities come together, families giving back, and individuals standing up for potential. It’s a beautiful reminder of what we can accomplish together.”
A Lasting Impact Through Mentorship
For Ayden, having a mentor like Kyle has meant more than just a friendship. It has given him a role model who encourages him and a safe place to grow into himself. Over the years, Kyle has watched Ayden’s athleticism flourish, especially in basketball. Ayden’s growth doesn’t stop there—he’s come into his own as a leader, often guiding younger kids through drills and activities at Sports Buddies meet-ups. For Ayden’s family, who wanted a strong male role model in his life, Kyle has been that steady and inspiring presence, cheering him on as he dreams big and builds confidence.
“Seeing Ayden take on leadership roles within the Sports Buddies program is one of the most rewarding parts of being a Big Brother,” Kyle shares. “Watching him grow into a young adult with his own strengths and ambitions is a reminder of why I signed up in the first place. He’s grown so much, and I’m honored to be part of his journey.”
The Colorado Child Care Contribution Tax Credit
Did you know that gifts to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado are eligible for the Colorado Child Care Contribution Tax Credit? This unique tax benefit allows Colorado residents to reduce their state tax liability by up to 50% of the donation amount. With this tax incentive, giving becomes more accessible and even more impactful for donors, offering a tangible reward for helping Colorado’s youth for year-end giving.
“The Colorado Child Tax Credit is a powerful tool for those who give. It makes contributing to our mission not only fulfilling but also financially accessible for more people,” Elycia shares. “We’re grateful to live in a state that values the wellbeing of its children so highly.”
Spread Holiday Joy and Hope for the Future
This holiday season, we ask you to consider making a gift during year-end giving time to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado. “Kyle and Ayden’s story is just one example of the transformative power of mentorship,” Elycia concludes. “When you give, you’re not just making a donation. You’re helping to create these life-changing moments that build young people up and help them find their paths. Thank you for standing with us this holiday season and being part of something bigger.”
