Staff Spotlight: Danielle Summerville

What are you most proud of during your tenure at BBBSC?

  • I am most proud of the lasting relationships that have been and are being created. The idea that two strangers can come together and forge a bond that leads them to become family as a result of Big Brothers Big Sisters is incredible.
  • I am proud of the staff members who choose to share their time and talent to make these relationships a reality.
  • I am proud of the support system that BBBSC creates for thousands of youth so that they can feel loved and supported by the community.
  • I am proud of the volunteers who show up as their authentic self in hopes that they can make a difference.
  • I am proud of our donors who believe in the work we are doing as evidenced by their willingness to give.
  • I am humbled to have been a part of BBBSC for the past 18 ½ years.

What was the most memorable moment you’ve had with your Little?

In 2018, I took my Little Sister, Valerie to see a performance of Shakespeare in Love-The Play at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. My Little Sister is pretty shy, but she comes alive during her choir and theatrical performances. She was amazing as a hyenas in her school production of the Lion King. As we entered the theater her eyes lit up. At the end of the performance I immediately turned to Valerie to ask what she thought of the performance. Before I could get the full sentence out she said “I loved it.” I don’t think she has ever said that about a match activity. Watching her find her passion for the arts has been extremely rewarding.

What has doing this work and being a part of the mission taught you?

Childhood is precious and short. Ideally you want every child to have a healthy and happy childhood. The reality is that many of our Littles are growing up with trauma and uncertainty. I have been humbled by the trust placed in us by our families, volunteers, and the community. Trust that Big Brothers Big Sisters will help children succeed and reach their full potential. The mission has taught me that with the right support system, full potential, whatever that looks like, can be achieved.

What advice would you give to a new BBBSC employee?

I would encourage a new BBBSC employee to fully understand their “why.” Your why will sustain you on your tough days and energize you other days. My why came after interviewing a wise beyond his years Little Brother.  When asked why he wanted a Big Brother, he very clearly shared that he didn’t want a Big Brother, he needed a Big Brother. His father had died and he needed someone who could help him navigate “manhood.” His clarity and expectations for the program changed my perspective. Yes, our matches have fun during their outings, but they also learn life lessons. One-to-one mentoring changes lives and you get to be a part of that.

What would you like to say to your staff and co-workers?

I’ve been blessed to have a career of a lifetime. When I came to Big Brothers Big Sisters, I could have never imagined that it would an 18 ½ year adventure. I am forever grateful to those who came before me and helped me realize my full potential. The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is as important today as it was in 1904. As long as there are children in need a of a positive, supportive role model, Big Brothers Big Sisters should be there to address the need.

You have the power to positively impact a child’s life. Don’t take that power for granted. When they look back, they may not remember your name, but they will remember your impact.
