Xavier (Little) and Scott (Big) were honored with the BOA Match of the Year award at BBBSC’s Big Little Gala: Building Tomorrow Together. Matched since October 2016 in the Community-based program, the pair has developed a bond that’s grown stronger over the years. Scott’s passion for volunteering began in childhood, as his parents fostered children, and when he moved to Colorado, he sought to deepen his roots by giving back to the community. Initially, Xavier was shy and reserved, but their conversation revealed they had far more in common than he expected.
Over the years, Scott and Xavier have developed traditions like pumpkin carving and snowboarding, while enjoying activities such as hiking, geocaching, tennis, rock climbing, and most recently, photography. Xavier’s love for photography has flourished, thanks to Scott’s mentorship, and he’s already taken award-winning photos with the skills he’s learned.
Their relationship is mutually enriching. Scott shared, “Xavier has taught me how to be a good leader and how to say yes to everything.” In return, Xavier expressed, “Scott has taught me so much, especially about giving back to the community, and I definitely want to continue.”Now a freshman at Colorado School of Mines, majoring in chemical engineering, Xavier’s career interest was sparked by witnessing Scott’s work in surgical technology. Reflecting on their eight-year match, Xavier shared, “I just want to say, I don’t think I could have done any of my accomplishments without having Scott as a support for me.”
