The Life-Changing Effects of Mentorship on Colorado Youth

Youth mentoring

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado, we know mentorship isn’t just a kind gesture— it’s a powerful investment in the future of our young people and our communities. New research confirms that mentorship changes lives and has a ripple effect that benefits individuals, families, and entire communities across Colorado.

Fundraising Ideas for NonprofitsAcross the state, we face significant challenges. In some areas, high school graduation rates lag behind the national average of 87%. Many young people lack access to career exploration opportunities, and socio-economic challenges continue to grow. Colorado also faces a workforce gap in key industries, with many employers struggling to find skilled talent.

Mentorship provides a critical and cost-effective solution to these issues. Research shows that youth in our program are 10% more likely to enroll in college, setting them on a path toward higher earning potential and increased economic stability. We also know that Mentored youth enter the workforce earning 20% more between the ages of 20 and 25 than their peers, and that mentorship closes two-thirds of the socioeconomic gap for young people. These results have profound implications for Colorado’s future.

Imagine this: With a $3,000 annual investment to support one match, the lifetime earnings of that young person increase dramatically, benefiting not just their family but also our local economy. Increased earnings and workforce participation mean greater tax revenue and reduced reliance on social services, with the state seeing a return on investment in just seven years.

Locally, we see these outcomes every day. Through our mentoring programs, youth in Denver Metro, Pikes Peak, and the surrounding communities develop the skills, confidence, and networks they need to succeed. They’re graduating, pursuing higher education or trade opportunities, and stepping into careers that help fill the talent pipeline in Colorado industries like technology, healthcare, and construction. And with strong mentors as their guides, these young people are also building the resilience to overcome challenges and creating a plan for their future.

Mentorship is one of the simplest and most effective ways to create lasting change, both for individuals and for our community. When we invest in mentoring, we’re investing in stronger schools, a more robust workforce, and a more equitable future for Coloradans.

As we look ahead, we need your partnership to help us reach the tens of thousands of youth in our state who are still waiting for a mentor. Together, we can ensure that every young person in Colorado has the opportunity to unlock their full potential and build a brighter future—for themselves and for all of us.

Thank you for your commitment to making this vision a reality. With your support, we’re not just changing lives—we’re changing Colorado for the better.
