Donor of the Month: Great-West Financial and Empower Retirement

Marie Scott with her mentee Evelin, matched since 2016.

Over the past two years, Great-West Financial and Empower Retirement has quickly become a highly valued and engaged partner to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado (BBBSC). Great-West Financial and Empower Retirement believes that focusing on financial literacy, health, and wellness are some of the best community investments, and we are fortunate they have chosen to invest funding and time in BBBSC.

Great-West Financial and Empower Retirement stepped up their partnership in 2018 to support our Centennial Anniversary, commemorating 100 years of service to the Colorado community since our year of incorporation, 1918. Their partnership included their Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer and BBBSC Board Member Steve Jenks serving on our Centennial Council to help drive our marketing and outreach efforts. Great-West Financial and Empower Retirement also sponsored our Centennial PSA which ran all year long on CBS4 and Comcast networks. Additionally, they were a Premiere Sponsor of our Centennial Gala which was a celebration of 100 years of mentoring impact, and a Birdie Sponsor at our Topgolf for Kids’ Sake event- sending 24 golfers to the event!

Furthermore, we are fortunate to have several employees who support BBBSC by giving their time as mentors. The Great-West Financial and Empower Retirement Associates Community Together (ACT) program empowers associates to support causes closest to their hearts and amplify their impact with company support. Great-West Financial and Empower Retirement matches volunteer hours up to $5,000 per associate a year, gives associates up to 16 hours of paid time off annually to volunteer, supports associates as they create or join teams to participate in charitable fundraising events, and encourages associates to form volunteer committees to plan philanthropic events and activities with and for their colleagues. Thank you to the following employees who volunteer at BBBSC.

Steve Jenks: Board Member, Centennial Marketing Committee Member, Mentor

Raquel Kennedy: Mentor

Marie Scott: Mentor

Jillian Becker: Mentor

Galin Mitchener: Mentor

Marie Scott, mentor2.0 mentor at Sheridan High School and Great-West Financial and Empower Retirement employee, has the following to say about her mentor2.0 experience: “I wanted to volunteer as a mentor because I felt that I could relate to what the students were going through and I knew how much I would have benefited from having a mentor in my life. My mentee Evelin is much more interested in college than she was before. She has several ambitions and understands that to pursue them, a college degree is required. The time commitment is small compared to the impact you can have on a student’s life.”

We are grateful to have this support from Great-West Financial and Empower Retirement and look forward to continuing our partnership for years to come!
